It seems pretty clear we face these alternatives:

1) Ours is the only civilization
2) Ours is the first civilization
3) Civilization always ends before it spreads among the stars
4) Civilization always spreads in a way unnoticable to newcomers.

These seem to me to become progressively contrived as we go down the list....Eniacnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-378357358243436521.post-61741824546322752922011-01-18T16:52:20.435-05:002011-01-18T16:52:20.435-05:00As I grow older (and more cynical) I have to lean ...As I grow older (and more cynical) I have to lean towards the conclusion that although intelligent life must exist out there by sheer probability alone, it never breaks the impassable black void of interstella - let alone intergalactic - space.

I just can't see how given millions of years to technologically evolve we havent had all those sci-fi dreams come true.

My only gasp of hope for something different is if we do in theory find someway FTL travel can exist, and its just a technological problem or lack of resources. Then I'll start looking for ET again :>)Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13460091890631736919noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-378357358243436521.post-21519048873129379362011-01-18T11:58:00.798-05:002011-01-18T11:58:00.798-05:00Perhaps there is a single intelligent civilization...Perhaps there is a single intelligent civilization for every super-cluster of galaxies. They're out there. But instead of being thousands of light years from us, they are millions of light years away from us. The closest alien civilization might be in the Virgo super-cluster, 60 million light years away.kurt9https://www.blogger.com/profile/02101147267959016924noreply@blogger.com
